Contains carbohydrates, sugars, vegetable fibers, fat, protein,  vitamins A, C, E, K, B6, beta carotene, lutein zeaxanthin, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, folic acid, choline, metals, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc. The root and the milky juice of the strain contain a bitter substance called lactupircin as well as tannins, insulin and rubber. Its leaves are very rich in salts, potassium, iron, vitamin A, B, C, D and magnesium. The whole plant has active substances. (the stems with the leaves fresh or dried)
 
Although it has the reputation of relieving general disorders of the body, it is mainly indicated for liver and gallbladder diseases, and is considered an excellent diuretic with mild laxative action. Traditionally, it is used as a digestive and tonic of the body and has the property of relieving bone and joint pains as well as respiratory infections.It is considered an excellent source of both potassium and calcium intake.
