The juniper, also known as juniper, cedar, venia, wild cypress, is a genus of plants with 60 species. Junipers have two types of leaves, needle-shaped and pointed, and are arranged in two or three. Some species have small scaly leaves. They grow in any well-drained, neutral or alkaline, even dry soil in sunny and partially shaded places. Juniper berries have a characteristic aromatic smell and are used as a spice and for flavoring alcoholic beverages and other types of liqueurs. Their taste is soft, almost sweet, with a slight bitterness at the end.
Juniper berries have antiseptic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic and diuretic properties. They are used in kidney diseases, they help with the treatment of arthritis, gout and rheumatic diseases. As a decoction it helps in cases of food poisoning, urinary tract infections, colic, and period pains. Juniper berry tea is commonly used to treat coughs and colds while chewing the fruit can help with mouth infections.
Making Tea: Put 1-3 teaspoons of dried berries in a cup of boiling water and leave it for 10-20 minutes before serving.
Drink up to 3 times a day.
