Lapacho or Tahibo or Pau d’Arco (Handroanthus impetiginosus) is a tree that grows in the forests of South America. Its inner bark is used as a tea. It has a strong bitter and earthy taste, like most drinks made from tree bark. In South America, it is also used for honey production as well as as an ornamental tree, due to its striking appearance when in bloom.
Lapacho has been used as an herb by Native Americans for thousands of years. It is considered to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties, its antioxidant action can help prevent damage caused by free radicals in cells and DNA. It has been used as blood tonic, for liver diseases, respiratory infections, common colds, flu, asthma, bronchitis, whooping cough. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties it has also been used for bladder infections, arthritis, and rheumatism.
Making Tea: Put 1 teaspoon of the dried bark in a cup of hot water and leave it for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Drink up to 3 times a day.
