Description:

Mahlepi or Mahlab, with the scientific name Prunus mahaleb or mahaleb cherry, is an aromatic spice made from the seeds of a species of cherry, Prunus mahaleb (the Mahaleb or St Lucie cherry).
It has been used for centuries in the Middle East and surrounding areas, especially in Turkey, Syria, Egypt, Armenia, Iran and traditionally in Greece. It looks like a tiny almond with a scent of bitter and cherry with orange blossoms. The tree is native to Central-South Europe and North Africa, but it reaches up to Central Asia. It is used for its pharmaceutical and cosmetic properties, such as spice, herb, dye, firewood, handicrafts and for the preparation of alcoholic beverages. However, its use is more common in pastry. It would be a shame to use it only in sweet recipes. You can sprinkle it on sauteed vegetables or creamy soups, rice and especially on dishes with carrots or pumpkin.

Health Benefits

The benefits come from the beneficial compounds it contains which include:

Coumarins: a set of anti-inflammatory compounds with a wide range of health-enhancing properties and considered to be its main source of flavor.
Oleic acid: contains high levels of oleic acid belonging to the Omega-3 fat family.
Linoleic acid: another of the omega fatty acids.
Coumarins are believed to help fight many diseases such as asthma, Alzheimer's, osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. It is also a natural vasodilator and in the Middle East is prescribed for patients with kidney and bladder stones.

Remember: Herbs are not a substitute for medicine. For their best and safe use it is better to consult your doctor.
