Milk Thistle also known as Common Thistle is a plant that is found mainly in the countryside, in mountainous and stony areas. It lives for two years and forms a shrub up to three meters high and up to one meter in diameter. It prefers dry summers and sandy or clayey soils rich in lime. Its leaves are often selected for consumption in various salads and can also be consumed as a tea.

Milk thistle has diaphoretic, choleretic, diuretic and tonic properties. In modern herbal medicine it is used to protect the liver from infections and for blood detoxification. It can be used in all gallbladder problems as it increases the secretion and flow of bile from the liver and gallbladder. It is also used as a tonic for the brain and memory, as a sedative for colds and pleurisy, but also for psoriasis. Finally milk thistle can help with weight loss since it can break down fat.

Making Tea:
Put 1 teaspoon of the dried herb in 1 cup of hot water and leave it for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Drink up to 3 times a day.

Remember: Herbs are not a substitute for medicine. For their best and safe use it is better to consult your doctor.
